A Fishy New Moon

Updated: Mar 1

New Moon in Pisces 2025

The New Moon swims into Pisces on 28th February, however, this is no ordinary lunation. It arrives amidst a rare and potent ocean of Piscean energy, as the Moon is joined by the Sun, Mercury, Saturn, and Neptune, each contributing a unique influence on the cosmic tides.

So, what does this all mean? The Sun infuses us with vitality, life, and brings forth illumination. The Moon calls for introspection, intuition, and renewal and rebirth. Mercury shapes our thoughts and ideas, our perceptions, and communication, where Saturn brings discipline and practicality, grounding us in a sense of responsibility, wisdom and maturity.

Finally, Neptune, which deserves a special mention as Pisces’ modern ruler, meaning it has a particular affinity or resonance with Piscean energy. Neptune is like a window between our conscious selves and the vast mysteries of life. It connects us to our deeper inner wisdom, nurturing our sense of trust to flow with the unknown, and developing our intuition and enlightenment. As astrologer Steven Forrest once said, “nobody can look at the universe without looking at it through their own values and assumptions”. In essence, Neptune is that lens: our personal window into the infinite mystery.

The Piscean New Moon invites reflection on where illusion and reality blur and where dreams and truth interweave. With Saturn’s guidance, we’re reminded that our inner world is just as much our responsibility as our external actions. Growth requires effort and discipline, to look within, confront hidden fears and self-deceptions, and free ourselves from what quietly holds us back.

Luckily, the New Moon is here to help!

New Moon with a Piscean flavour

The New Moon is the perfect time to plant new seeds, ones you will cultivate to take you ever closer to your future goals and the fulfilment of your hopes and dreams. The question is always what seeds to plant? What possibilities and potentials might be waiting to emerge?

Pisces energy, as you might expect from its fishy archetype, is a little slippery to pin down (I apologise now for every water and fish-based pun that you are about to read). The more you try and grasp it and describe it, the more it slips through your fingers like water; or a slippery fish! This is a good indication of the quality of the energy we are now immersed in.

Piscean energy can be fluid, elusive and intangible. This reflects its deep connection with the unseen, the mysterious and the liminal in-between places. Pisceans dream new worlds into being, transcending the limitations of time and space, to envision new realties and ways of existing. When we swim with Pisces, we are drawn to awe and wonder, to whispered fantasies and worlds shaped by our creativity and imagination. As we dive, dive, dive with Pisces, asking ourselves what else? What else? What else? We open ourselves up to infinite possibilities, where dreams and reality become one.

So again, what does this mean for the more practical among us? How can we embrace and work with an influence that is so ethereal and vague?

The answer is easier than you might think. Everyone has to have hopes and dreams, without them, life lacks direction, meaning and purpose. Whilst many of us may not see ourselves as visionaries or creatives, we do, in fact, constantly create our own lives. Every day, our choices are guided and shaped, consciously or not, by our visions, stories, values, and beliefs, and what we make those mean. While Pisces encourages us to draw on our imagination and creativity to plan for these influences in our lives, Saturn, supports the process by seeking our commitment to our dreams, guiding us like a wise elder, to the next right actions needed to bring them into reality.

Exploring what seeds to plant under this New Moon, you might question how you plan to reconnect, reimaging and reconceptualise yourself and your life? You might ask:

If I knew I would succeed, what dream would I pursue?

If listened to the whispers of my heart, and dared to dream and hope, what could be possible?

What visions do I hold for myself and my life? Who do I need to become to make this happen?

If I listened to my intuition, my gut feelings, what would I do next?

Accepting what is

As the last sign of the zodiac, Pisces invites us to honour the space of endings and beginnings, of death and rebirth, before stepping forward into the initiating, fiery energy of Aries. With the New Moon influence, this energy directs us inward to explore our emotional landscape. It calls us to consider, what are we holding on to that we have outgrown? What do we need to release that no longer serves us? What in our life are we ready to dissolve and where are we ready to transform?

Life is not only like a mystery, it is full of mystery. And if we are honest, there are mysteries, secret and hidden parts within all of us: As above so below, as within so without. Pisces connects us with the vast ocean of consciousness that is both within us and which flows all around us, weaving an invisible thread that links us to every living thing, human, planet, and animal alike.

Interestingly, while Neptune is Pisces’ modern ruler, classical astrology attributed this sign to Jupiter; the planet often related to luck and expansion, but also of faith. This does not necessarily mean religion, although it may encapsulate this for some, but faith here is far more about trust and belief in something larger or outside of ourselves, beyond what we can see, hear, and touch. This is most certainly the realm of Pisces.

As noted by Steven Forrest, Pisces can very much embody both the Jupiterian and Neptunian influence, it is after all symbolised by two fish. Therefore, this New Moon, opens the door to where faith and illusion, fantasy, and reality stand hand in hand and exist together, and we are asked to navigate a delicate balance between them.

While I believe we are not meant to know everything about everything, perhaps not even everything about ourselves or the unfolding paths of our lives. And while it could be said growth and personal evolution come from being curious and seeking to understand just a little bit more. It can also come from accepting and acting upon one of the harder Piscean wisdoms; that of surrendering what we cannot control and simply resting in the waters of the unknown and unknowable.

This is not just about going with the flow, although that too is a good idea, this is a far more powerful and active process. When we actively stop resisting uncertainty and instead meet it with acceptance, we find peace. In the stillness or surrender and the introspection of the New Moon, we can listen to our institution and “know” our next right actions. Simples right, as a well-known advert might suggest.

Here you might ask yourself, where in my life am I holding too tightly and trying to control too much?

Where am I not able to trust?

How might I surrender and trust the process? Or even where might I need faith and to trust in universal timing?

An extended cosmic conversation that involves Jupiter in Gemini squaring all of this Piscean energy, might invite you to further ask:

Where have I become scattered or overextended?

Or where am I settling for too little? A powerful but not often considered Jupiterian question.

The great dissolving

Pisces also reminds us of our sensitivity as we ride the waves of life. The influence of the New Moon highlights our emotional landscape, often amplifying our feelings. During this time, it can feel as though the dial on our emotions is turned all the way up. We may even feel overwhelmed by this emotional intensity, particularly when navigating worries, insecurities and fears. Awareness and boundaries are especially important as we consider what feelings belong to us and, therefore, ours to feel and what belongs to others!

With the world full of chaos and fear and the seemingly endless impacts of power, greed and selfishness, humanity and compassion can seem in short supply. Pisces, as the fish of awareness, invites us to reflect on what we allow ourselves to emotionally absorb from the world around us, and consider what we make this this mean. It asks us what is true and what is mere illusion?

To dream a new world, we sometimes have to step away, momentarily, from the distraction and noise of the old one, so that we might better hear the whispers of possibility and potential, and a new story waiting to be told. Therefore, it may be a time to consider a media break, just for a while. After all, while we cannot hide from reality, and nor should we, the New Moon is a time to consider sowing the seeds for a future we want to see, too much of the current negativity will not serve us well here.

What of the hurt, wounds, or trauma of our own lives I hear you ask? Yes, these too may be turned up to maximum. However, here it may not be such a good idea to turn away but to acknowledge these. Our personal and professional boundaries are important, particularly while we develop our awareness of what is our responsibility to feel, what is being thrust on upon us and belongs to others. Returning once more to Steven Forrest, “there is so much in life that we ultimately have to let go...but we need to acknowledge our hurt.”

The New Moons gift of stillness, surrender and introspection, provides opportunities to listen to our intuition and wise inner voice. We have space to find compassion for ourselves, for others and the hurts we carry. Within the Moons healing waters we learn to forgive, to release hurts and to dissolve what is untrue, including the illusions and self-delusions that no longer serve us. Allowing these to dissolve is very much like being cleansed by Piscean-Neptunian healing mist,  washing away the old to make space for the new.

Pisces calls on us to see ourselves and our world all with compassion, humour and intuitive wisdom. Through reconnecting with the magic and wisdom that reside deep within us, we can ask "what would be a more enlightened response to our wounds and our world right now?" In answering with faith, humanity and compassion, we find our own path to renewal, growth and transformation.

Piscean reflective question might include:

Where might I need to practice more compassion for self and others?

Where are my boundaries?

How can I release what is not mine to feel?

What hurts do I cling to but no longer serve me?

How can I practice forgiveness for myself and others?

What psychological and emotional hurts am I ready to release?

Final thoughts

The Piscean New Moon in February invites you to envision the world you wish to create. The seeds of intension and attention you sow this New Moon, need to come from the depths of your heart, rooted in intuition and sown with purpose.

As you navigate the balance between dream and reality, illusion and truth, you open yourself to possibility and transformation. Whether you dive, dive, dive into your dreams, or let go of old wounds and things that no longer serve you, do it with trust, compassion and enlightened awareness.

Don’t be surprised this New Moon if you feel drawn to quiet and/or solitude.  A quiet walk, a long bath, staying hydrated by drinking more water, or even embracing your inner fish and going for a swim, may all be important examples of self-care. You might engage your creativity and harness your own ability to dream. Whatever you choose this New Moon, ensure it is undertaken with greater self-compassion and a deeper awareness of self.
